Taking time to think
If you’re anything like me, many if not most of the mistakes I’ve made in
my life came about from a lack of thought. We’ve all been guilty of
speaking before thinking. We’ve all at times acted rashly only to regret a
hasty decision that brought complication, pain and suffering. A dear
friend many years ago gave me this piece of advice and I’ve never
forgotten it. He said “in prayer, already determine in your heart and
confess to the Lord that when a situation arises that tests the soul,
predetermine that your response will be love, patience, understanding
and mercy. So, when a difficult conversation arises, or an altercation
ensues, our mind and heart have already decided how to respond. The
result will usually be one of restoration, reconciliation and resolve, peace
in the midst of the storm. Without predetermining our response, emotion
can take the upper hand and leave hurt and regret in its wake. I must
confess that I have not always followed this wise and godly counsel, but
I’m getting better and the fruit encourages me to keep working at it. God
is good, His mercy is new every day, and His love covers a multitude of
sins. If you haven’t put into life action this principle, try it. It’s guaranteed
to lessen the drama and open the door for Jesus to shine.
